Suicide has long been viewed as an unpardonable sin by the Catholic Church. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, suicide was not only a serious sin but also one that by its very nature denied a person the chance to repent and, as a result, receive pardon.

Of course, this is no longer the case with the Church as in addition to praying for suicide victims, the church now also burying them, entrusting them to God’s infinite mercy.

There is no sin, no matter how heinous, that cannot be pardoned, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

However, in the Book of Matthew 12: 31-32 Jesus said “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.”

Luke 12: 10 “And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.”

and

Mark 3:29 “but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.”

The exact definition of such sin against the Holy Spirit is unclear, but it is generally accepted that rejecting God and his gospel of salvation is the most extreme and complete rejection one can make.

So in my own little understanding, I think that the only sin that cannot be forgiven is the rejection of God.

I pray the good LORD, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, keep and bless you all the days of your life in the mighty name of J E S U S Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Amen.
