On the Need to Pray ceaselessly for the Holy Father

(This is different from praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. We do that mostly to fulfil the conditions for gaining indulgences. Usually a _Pater_, an _Ave_ and a _Gloria_)

How often do we remember to pray _for the Pope_?

Pope Francis is our _Papa_, our Father. Without him we cannot gain any indulgences. He is our spiritual father. The Holy Father. The father of all the human beings on earth, both those who acknowledge him and those who do not. He is our father.

The Pope is the man with the heaviest cross in the world. His responsibility is the greatest. He is the Vice of Christ. How could God task a man with such responsibility! He is therefore the most tempted by the devil. You think you suffer temptations? St John Vianney said every priest suffers a thousand times more temptations that any of us. Imagine what would be the condition of the Vicar of Christ!

But, of course, God does not leave him desolate. He puts into many parts of the Liturgy prayers for the Pope. He is prayed for at every Sacrifice of the Mass, on Good Friday, and in many devotions. I have heard it taught that the Pope’s guardian angel is St Michael. What a grace!

The Liturgy guides us on how we must pray. Therefore we ought to  pray for the Pope. Frequently. Because the devil goes for the generals. He knows if he succeeds in leading the Pope to sin, he would do a much greater deal of damage to souls than if it were any of us. So the devil unleashes all of hell’s fury at him. He ensnares him with all kinds of temptations. He would not leave him alone.

So we must pray always for the Pope. Mention in your intentions at every Mass you pray, at every daily rosary, at every other prayer you say. That is the only thing we can do for (and we owe) our father.

May the Holy Apostle Peter, and all the saint Popes, pray for our present Pope Francis, that he may follow the path of the Saints before him, and be truly holy, leaving us all only examples of virtue and true Catholic Spiritually. Amen.

Prayers for the Holy Father

Especially to be said after the Holy Rosary

V. Let us pray for our Pontiff, Pope N.

R. The Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him to be blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

Our Father, Hail Mary

Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, have mercy upon Thy servant, N., our Supreme Pontiff, and direct him, according to Thy loving-kindness, in the way of eternal salvation; that, of thy gift, he may ever desire that which is pleasing unto thee and may accomplish it with all his might. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen (Roman Ritual).
